Something about the idea of never getting something [a raise, a promotion] if you never ask for it in professional settings just... doesn't sit right with me.

I understand the importance of advocating for yourself and your career at work. I don't like the whole "you never getting a raise, a promotion or the recognition you deserve at work is your fault" undertone of some of the advice I've been seeing floating around lately.
