cranky programming complain about paths and handles

who are these people writing functions that require paths and not just file handles, like I've always got an actual file on an actual disk I can pass in

especially if you're just using the path to sniff the data format by checking the extension! maybe just let me specify the file format when I call the function?

(talking about this line github.com/tensorflow/tensorfl among others)

@aparrish cool kids let their function take paths or streams

cranky programming complain about paths and handles

@bcj and that's exactly what this function did in the previous version of keras! so I could use pkg_resources resource_stream() to get a pretrained model from the python package data! but they changed it for no good reason and now I have to actually get the filename, oh well

@aparrish *rolling eyes, making jerk-off motion* “data scientists”

@jasonscheirer the one main thing I've noticed as a software engineer/artist/teacher while working with mainstream machine learning frameworks over the past year is: they do not give a shit about making it easy to write actually deployable software

@aparrish 100% agree. Also using paths instead of handles is a recipe for race conditions.
