i spent the bulk of the last year getting a worker-owned technology cooperative off the ground! all my paid professional work is now done through the EMMA Technology Cooperative

https://emma.coop/

EMMA is me, @andymakes Ivan Safrin and Gwen Pasquarello. it's an experiment in non-hierarchical consensus-based labor organization, and it has been an absolute thrill to work in a way that aligns with my principles for the first time!

“In this shadow of solid light, we go together.”

Since the last time I was active on here, I made a whole series of black and gold sculptures, and last year exhibited most of them in a show in NYC. I’m excited to share more work here~

A sincere tip for longtime fediverse people who would like their friends to stick around here longer than a week:

If you're on Mastodon or Hometown, you can click the "bell" icon in the profile of someone you follow. This will make it so that every time they post, it will appear in your notifications like an "@". I am enabling this temporarily for friends so that I remember to interact with them. This is important for making this place feel more lively and helps people stick around!

i finally finished my hand-woven kitchen towels! the last step was hemming the edges, which required learning literally the bare basics of hand sewing (which somehow i had avoided learning until this point in my life). i wove them on my 15" schacht cricket rigid heddle loom using a pattern and yarn from Gist (the brooks bouquet/waffle weave detail at the edges was my own addition). it was incredibly fun and satisfying to make these! hell yes to fiber crafts imo

finally just turning off autocorrect because correcting its corrections has become so infuriating, one notices how much one leans on its behaviors - everyone living with an input layer where just constantly fighting against the distortions it imposes on your thinking and communication is baked into the expected interaction model is so beautifully emblematic of our deeply weird times

AI and ethics

here's the DALL-E 2 model card btw github.com/openai/dalle-2-prev which basically reads like the Sandia Labs report. "This model is not a model of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here"

I don't use models like this in my work for a bunch of reasons, but a big one is knowing that "indignity and erasure" directed at me are always lurking around the corner. it's same reason I use models like these sparingly in my classroom. I'm not eager to make my classroom a site of industrial bias amplification, and it's just too much to ask my students to endure the model's potential harms

I've been thinking about this more twitter.com/mtrc/status/151225

the DALL-E 2 "Risks and Limitations" doc (very presumptuously) discusses "downstream effects... on public discourse." but it's also worth discussing how the harms of the model limit who is made to feel welcome as *researchers and users*. if you're subject to these harms, the cost of that kind of participation is the constant work of sublimating the harm.

i have been a life-long fan of the utah jazz. they're my hometown team and i love watching them play. but the team's lukewarm response to recent transphobic legislation in utah, combined with the NBA's refusal to take meaningful action to combat it (e.g., by refusing to move the 2023 all-star game from Salt Lake City) have made it reeeeally difficult to continue to be a fan. i know it's not reasonable to expect solidarity from corporations but it still hurts!

aaah this one is also cool: Nadine Lavan manipulated vocal parameters digitally to make an artificial "left-handed voice" and "right-handed voice" distinction. for example, in one experiment lefthanders were made to have a higher F2, and righthanders lower; in another, lefthanders have a lower F2 but a highter F0, and so on.

after a short training, people were able to identify voices as totally left-handed or clearly right-handed, using all provided cues (including 'unnatural' patters like increased F2+decreased F0).

point being, the strong bimodal distribution we see in voice gender, while clearly based on hormonal anatomics, is shaped by the gender binary, not the other way around. we know from previous experiments that prepubescent children already have voices identifiable as 'male' or 'female', before any hormones have a chance to act; likely because boys identifying as boys will speak in a boyishly manner, subconsciously. if we had a society with a typical spectral pattern for 3 genders, or 5, or handedness, or political spectrum etc., then people would subconsciously reproduce and identify those acoustic, too.
