mastodon 4.0 question

how can you see the number of users on an instance? they removed it from the about page. I used this a lot to contextualize instances and understand growth across the network, kind of annoyed it’s less prominent because it’s pretty important info, but that may be me being ungenerous

I have no idea what hashtags to use

mastodon 4.0 question answered

for anyone interested, it’s just no longer available on mobile view or smaller browsers. there’s still a small “server stats” box showing active users when you full screen, are logged out, and look at the about page

mastodon 4.0 question

@christa I usually see it on the "about" page of a server. (so like friend.camp/about )

mastodon 4.0 question

@geekygirlsarah yeah, this is no longer the case after the upgrade unfortunately

mastodon 4.0 question

@geekygirlsarah friend camp is on hometown, so it’s mastodon 3.x

mastodon 4.0 question

@geekygirlsarah see sfba.social/about or mastodon.social/about for examples! gimme them stats, I’m sure they’re somewhere

mastodon 4.0 question

@christa Hmm, no good. I have no answers then.

[fades out slowly]

mastodon 4.0 question

@christa I don't have a good answer for this, other than making some calls to the admin API and collecting the results.

curl -vv -H "Authorization: Bearer your_token" "https://thegem.city/api/v1/admin/accounts?local=True" | jq '.[] | .username'

The "Link" header will have a ' rel="next"' value if there are more results to fetch because that API endpoint will return at most 100 accounts at a time.

mastodon 4.0 question

@nick I want to believe this info is still publicly available in the UI somewhere, just at a route I don’t expect. it seems like a terrible choice for many reasons to hide it? going to poke around the code base

mastodon 4.0 question

@christa @nick wow, that is a bad change. I can't find it anywhere in the UI. It is still available in the API but not displayed anywhere: https://mastodon.social/api/v1/instance

mastodon 4.0 question

@rra @nick ah it’s still there on logged out desktop view of the about page, just no longer on mobile.
