programming dates horror

a coworker told a secondhand story of when some state legislature regularly extended a month in recordkeeping (eg january 34th) because each year they legally they had to complete something by end of that month and would fail. supporting these technically correct records in code involved rewriting the python module for datetime

This was my "office" for 7 years back when I worked at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. What a view, huh?

That's the Milky Way framed by the entrance corridor to the underground "residencia", where we sleep, eat, etc. I miss those views!

also I actually want this to happen and still keep meaning to turn the bleep bloop hotline into some part of it. someday!

Georgetown on how half of children in US have insurance through Medicaid CHIP and how that's in danger:

us safety net, uspol (1/2)

this morning I can't stop thinking about how many US safety net programs (SNAP, WIC, TANF, Medicaid/CHIP, etc) are used by families with children, and how hard we make those programs to get onto and use, even when the legislature isn't gutting and carving funding.

This may be a good time to discuss content warnings. The format I use is general-comma-specific, like an entry in a book index. For example:

The idea is to help people manage their stress around potentially stressful topics, so name the stressors, but try to keep the actual stress below the fold.

It's a feature that operates on trust, so don't abuse it. And hashtags don't work in CWs, but you can always repeat the CW labels as hasgtags in the body of the post.

I recreated the unreasonably picturesque Taco Bell in Pacifica, California in Creative Mode as "Nueva Pacifica Grah'co Bell":
Quick, fun project this. Built yesterday shortly after realizing how well-suited the real building's architecture was to NMS's modular wood kit. Scouting a good beach location with the right view took about as much time as building.
