I've now published a version of the "How to Make the Fediverse Your Own" document (a love letter from Social.coop to the fediverse) on our official wiki here: wiki.social.coop/How-to-make-t

Please share this version from now on.

Quick little blog post on what I hope to get out of migrating to a small personal Hometown server from the big Mastodon server I was on for five years parkerhiggins.net/2022/11/toot

While I was waiting for the 1700+ pages of Grace Lee Bogg's FBI files to go through OCR and other processing, I rendered a portrait of her out of over a thousand of their pages

:anarchism: 👇WORKSHOP DETAILS 👇:fediverso:

(please booooost!)

🗓 This SUNDAY November 13th at 11am ET we're presenting our workshop "Alternative Social Media for Anarchists - An Anarchist Introduction to the Fediverse"

The workshop is ONLINE on zoom, as part of the Boston Anarchist Bookfair: bostonanarchistbookfair.org/20

🤓 First we will explain what the Fediverse is, how it works, and why anarchists should embrace it. :anarchism:

Then we will invite participants to register for an account at an instance and do a guided walkthrough/tutorial of how to use Mastodon! 🐘🤔

Please BOOST! 🗣 and share far and wide both on and off Fedi. This will be a great way for new or curious users to understand the Fediverse and how to get started on here! It will be a very nice and safe hand holding workshop! If you just got here and are lost and confused, come! And bring a friend who is curious!

✅ You need to register in advance with the bookfair to get a link to the zoom on Sunday. Registration link: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regist

👉 (please do not reply complaining about how the workshop is on zoom! The Boston Anarchist Bookfair is the host, and so we are beholden to their choice of platform. They are running their bookfair as they see fit to reach and accommodate their audience. We already know why zoom is evil. Don't bother @ ing us to tell us. We will happily give the workshop again on Jitsi or another platform if another org would like to host and promote it, so just get in touch!)

It took about 7 years, but I've obtained all 1700+ pages of FBI files on the radical activist Grace Lee Boggs, who died in 2015 at 100 years old. The files cover two major investigations from the 1940s to 1970s. Read them here: foiathedead.org/posts/grace-le

Fedi stats

Wow. Stats on federated events consumed by our server this week:

Nov 3-5: 280k events each day
Nov 6: 410k events
Nov 7: 764k events
Nov 8 (which is not even over yet): 1.7 million events

This is a sustained increase over the course of about a week. I have never seen anything like it. Usually what we see in an influx is a one or two day bump and then dropoff. I have never seen a week of solid rampup before. This feels very different.

US midterms and misinformation / work posting

the washington post has an article up today about the work immigrant groups, newsrooms, and meedan (where I work) have been doing to curb misinformation in non-english language speaking communities for the US midterms, and how gargantuan of a task it is particularly when large centralized platforms continue to be rife with misinformation and moderate non-english content poorly.

uspol -

struggling to think of a more cartoonishly transparent object lesson of the idea that "democracy and capitalism are fundamentally incompatible because capitalists can easily convert their disproportionate economic power into disproportionate political power" than a fuck up apartheid billionaire personally buying the biggest social network for the cost of "more money than god" right before a critical election and then telling his followers to vote for fascism

I've been talking with many friends considering moving to Mastodon, so I tried to writeup my thoughts about why and how to do that! it's not comprehensive, instead like a casual chat, but hope it's helpful!

feel free to share; feedback & q's welcome

wow, this volunteer-maintained network really isn't living up to the expectations set by a billionaire company's precedents. i'm gonna post about it on a site that just lost most of its revenue
