One thing that I think people don’t realize or have forgotten is there used to be waaaaaay less opinion and editorial. The news was predominantly reporting. I think Time (which was a serious publication at one point) ran their first ever editorial during Watergate, like 50 years into their run. The New York Times was not always so dominated by its terrible op ed section. Even CNN had a lot fewer talk shows 30 years ago.
Now American news is mostly some jackass’s opinion about a press release.
my new co worker has lived in the us for 25 years and still speaks british english. no one would ever send her to accent improvement classes. she can laugh about how people give her funny looks for insisting on spelling things like "colour". she's allowed to refuse assimilation out of pride. my family gets punished for not assimilating.
i get very tired when people want to argue with me about how it's unfair to paint america as a racist country.
don't know how to describe this feeling of, a person at work with a british accent comes off as charming and quirky with her diction and word choice, whereas my father was sent to accent improvement "professional development classes" by his employer for having a chinese accent (which in no way actually impacted his ability to communicate with co-workers)
When I undertake to tell the best, I find I cannot, My tongue is ineffectual on its pivots, My breath will not be obedient to its organs, I become a dumb man. The best of the earth cannot be told anyhow—all or any is best; It is not what you anticipated—it is cheaper, easier, nearer; Things are not dismissed from the places they held before; The earth is just as positive and direct as it was before;
