Way too many words aimed at a white audiance about whiteness and anti-racism
Hi, white folks! Come here a sec. You aren't in trouble or anything; just need to talk.
I keep hearing little bits and pieces of stories of Black folks being chased off the platform; and not just by the nazi side of the fedi either. I don't know the specifics, but the stuff I am catching bits of totally tracks and it's frankly kind of horrifying but... ultimately unsurprising; I wish it could go without saying, but DO BETTER. Don't let that shit persist. Holy fuckballs this place is should be better than that.
Even white people who aren't actively trying to be shitty still fuck up and do harmful shit. Everytime I see a post about this shit going down there are ALWAYS some, I hope well meaning but you cant ever really tell, white folks chiming in in the replys to say stuff like "oh my God, that sounds awful. Got receipts?" And like, that translates to either "I don't want to believe you", "I don't believe you" or "I want to go look at some racism for some reason!"
Don't do that either! Let people vent about shitty things. Let people warn each other about those shitty things without prying into it. Try to develop a sense for when a particular conversation isn't for you and resist any urge you might have to insert yourself in to those conversations, well meaning or not.
If you want to be constructive, watch your own circle and call people in if you see them being shitty. If you truly, actually want to be a white person participating effectively in trying to stop racism, talk to them privately and explain that they're behaving shittily and that it is effecting your view of them. In my experience that is going to be the best chance you have of getting past that weird "white person defensive reflex" that happens when you tell a white person who isn't a total piece of shit that they just did a shitty thing.
Don't dunk, don't try to build clout off the situation. If you are white, you should focus on making yourself andnother white people less racist. Not trying to appear less racist you4self through performative displays.
If someone's behavior is persistent and egregious enough, publicly calling them out can be a necessary last measure.
If they have demonstrated that they are a danger to be around, people need to be warned.
On a related note, if you ARE white, you need to think very very hard before publicly calling out someone who isn't also white for doing problematic shit.
This one is hard, but here's the thing; a pattern I have seen over and over in spaces that aren't permissive to being *phobic or *ist; I have seen white people, with a terrifying amount of glee and swiftness, dog pile on someone who isn't white for saying problematic shit. But at the same time giving waaayyy more room to fuckup to white people doing similar shit. That is racism!
Look, I think there is a great opportunity to make fedi a place where people can be safe and build communities, and idk maybe white people can practice not being so weird and like, sunconsously abusive by default all the time. I also kinda hope, maybe nievely, that once that model is established and more and more people start to take part in community building that it will start to bleed back out into the physical world.
And maybe, just maybe, white people can actually contribute to dismantling white supremacist culture.
In order to make that happen we NEED to unfuck these patterns and attitudes of the old world to build a better new one.
Finally, just a quick bonus tip; I'm not sure how problematic it is, but if you ever feel the need to mention something like "I'm white, by the way" or "as a white person..." in ANY conversation; it is almost certainly not necessary.
Most people, especially non-white folks living and working in predominantly white communities can usually already tell.
Similarly, there probably isn't any real useful insight into whiteness you could give that non-white folks don't already know. Adapting to whiteness is basically a survival skill that people shouldn't need to have developed and yet... here we are.
Hi, I'm Andrew. I created and run the monthly indie game anthology, Indiepocalypse.
Each month I curate games from 10 developers (1 being newly commissioned) and sell the issues to promote shorter, weirder, alternative games and to pay the devs.
I've been doing it for over 2 years!
If you woke up tomorrow and scientists had somehow found irrefutable proof that humanity would never, ever be able to travel to other star systems or live sustainably on other planets even within our own star system - nor would any aliens out there be able to do same and visit us - what, in your opinion, would make our existence as a species meaningful in the very long term?
I am very bad at... I guess this counts as marketing?
This Sunday, once again, Black & Indigenous folk can pick up free plants, courtesy of the Groundhog Autonomous Zone, at Pineywood Park, between 10:30 and 11:30.
Other folk can inquiry about potentially bartering for plants, but every plant we trade is a plant we're not gifting.
If you want to learn more about the GAZ, we put together a public infosheet available at https://cryptpad.fr/code/#/2/code/view/tq7vT907OJy-dYW-ba8QNm2cXm7gZyLr+Kfw3MDTYWE/embed/present/
Notably, we're considering putting together a local reading group for anarchist texts (you can find a form to nominate what we read first through the link above)
We also have a Discord we're turning into an online school for learning about (and practicing) anarchy - mutuals can DM me for an invite to that one, or you can get an invite by becoming a monthly donor to my Ko-Fi,
Alright, that's all the publicity stuff, I think? Here's the plant list:
Stonecrop sedum, bee balm, mountainmint, spearmint, mugwort.
We have a limited number of mullein & chamomile for Black and Indigenous folk who provide herbal care to our community.
DM to arrange pickup!
(Not local but want to help? Share this post! Whenever one of these gets boosted by a few accounts, I end up meeting a new person in the area who wants some plants!)
Maybe there's a little of circle theory in the CW discourse? Vent outwards, support inwards. I would *never* tell someone to CW shit that affects *them* more than it affects *me*.
Conversely, I don't want to be the guy that says "hey, oppressed friends, here's some more upsetting stuff for you!" without a heads-up.
If you ask "should one CW this?" you seek a universal that shouldn't exist. Ask "should *I* CW this?".

"There’s a saying that anything that could be destroyed by the truth should be; it suggests a cousin proverb, that what could be destroyed by your declining to break your back over it should be. There is so much held together at the seams only by the worst kind of work — not the labor of production, creation, or caretaking, but of smoothing over, choking back, reaching past any limits to be that which will sustain something unsustainable. . . . The power that so many of us have to change the deeply fucked systems we’re part of by abstaining from them — a more active and dangerous prospect than the language makes it sound — is immense, and it is terrifying."

ideally you're going to pay for this book at some point, because Dunbar-Ortiz and the publisher deserve continued income for putting this out there. ebook is $13 in the usual places, paperback is $16 from Beacon Press: http://www.beacon.org/An-Indigenous-Peoples-History-of-the-United-States-P1164.aspx
but if that's not feasible for you, you can still read it right now 💚
If you live basically anywhere on the US west coast you have to deal with the annual wildfire smoke season. During smoke events the air quality measurement to worry about is amount of 2.5 micron particulate matter in the air. When the air quality rating is 100, that's about equivalent to smoking about 1.6 cigarettes per day. I've seen numbers as high as 600 during wildfire events in the PNW.
