The key to a good Mastodon home timeline: show no boosts
If I'm bored or need new people in my network I go to the federated timeline, shudder for 2 or 3 minutes straight, and go back to my home timeline where I only see things originally posted by people I follow
@darius instant boost tbqh. Also, wow, I had a really weirdly almost-repulsed reaction to this - reposting is literally life on social platforms. Almost sacrilege to disable it (:
@antifuchs I also get notified when my posts are favorited but not when they are boosted! I sometimes forget boosting even exists and it's great
@darius I do this on twitter already, didn't realize it was that easy on Mastodon!
@darius ok, but I would actually love local-boosts only
@darius or follow-boosts?
@bcj What do you mean by that? (either of those)
@darius only show boosts of posts by people from friend camp, or only boosts of posts by people I follow
@darius Probably depends a lot on your TL/instance. My TL gets mostly worthwhile boosts. My federated TL is a morass.
@darius oh, how I would *love* this on a per-user basis.
Friend Camp features several modifications that were requested by our users.
If you want decent privacy (the info doesn't leave this server), the only way to do that is to set your account to private, only accept friend requests from other friend.camp users, and only ever @ mention other friend.camp users. Once you start talking to people on other servers, all bets are off. Any private message you send to someone on another server could be looked at by the admin of a different server. This is kind of like email: if you are on a private email server, and you send an unencrypted email to a gmail account, congrats, Google now has the content of that email. But also, you do this every day, so, hey. The internet!
