I finished my stint as a Mozilla Fellow and now I'm relaunching my Patreon with a focus on, well, fixing social media.
This means I'm going to continue my concerted work trying to make the fediverse a better place, in the form of best practice guides for running instances, external advocacy, and technical tutorials and training so that more people can contribute software to the fediverse at large.
You can read a partial summary of my work so far at my new Patreon page!
Oh, and I'm releasing my own fork of Mastodon based on my experiences running Friend Camp for a year. It's called Hometown, and you can read more about it here:
It's not fully documented yet but it will be. Experienced Mastodon admins should be able to switch over with a minor database migration and minimal fuss.
Waiting for Quote and add Trending Hashtag that would be nice too 👌
And How people know a post is local only?
@inditoot You select it like this and posts have the little extra "broken chain" icon on them, we've been running friend camp with this feature for a year now.
@darius this is really cool! I've actually been thinking a lot about making a decentralized discord/slack thing in this same small-locally-operated style (not anytime soon, maybe starting next year) and would love to chat with you abt what you're learning sometime.
@darius Ahahaha, I see this just as I finished forking and deploying the friend.camp version
Do you recommend moving over to hometown instead?
@gaeel Yes, that's actually something I'm supporting so I recommend it, it should not even require a db migration to move over from friend camp, they are very similar right now
@darius Just setup my first Mastodon instance using your Hometown fork!
runyourown.social is our guide as my friends and I develop birb.town into our own personal home on the internet. Thank you!
@darius i just got a hometown instance up and, i think, working? have been thinking about runyourown.social ever since it went up, am so excited to play with it and get some folks onboarded!!
@darius the intro on this pinned post always bothers me because it’s the third pinned post on your profile and the first two open with “I’m pleased to” and then “I’m extremely pleased to” so I always want this one to read something like “I’m rapturously pleased to”.

Hometown is adapted from Mastodon, a decentralized social network with no ads, no corporate surveillance, and ethical design.
