Twitter's decentralization play

I'll repeat what I tweeted about it: the hilarious thing is that they could take their budget for this initiative, slash it by 90%, distribute the remaining 10% to like 2 dozen Patreons, and thereby do approximately 1000% more to create a viable decentralized social media standard and implementations.

Twitter's decentralization play

@darius I think that's not the goal. 🤔

Twitter's decentralization play

@hope did I say hilarious, sorry, I meant infuriating

Twitter's decentralization play

@darius The extra money goes toward tight controls to avoid too much decentralization.

@darius But you also know that's not what they want to do either.

Twitter's decentralization play

@darius That's not what they want though, they want some sort of "open core" strategic advantage that will bootstrap them to a currently unreachable tier of scale and relevance.

Twitter's decentralization play

@jplebreton I assume you didn't use the word "Bootstrap" on purpose but either way, well done

Twitter's decentralization play

@darius it's just the default verb for these dipshits. "gonna go bootstrap a $12 coffee, you want one?"

Twitter's decentralization play

@darius right? The whole announcement is bonkers if you've been paying any attention to decentralized social media in the last... I was going to say 3 years but Diaspora has been around since 2010 and that's just the first example _I'm_ aware of.

Twitter's decentralization play

@darius time to create nice static sites and accessible donation options for the ensuing flood of interested people during the first half of 2020

Twitter's decentralization play

@cblgh @darius but tbh the gap between what Twitter is Vs what the fediverse is means that basically no fedi instances would federate with Twitter even if Twitter did ActivityPub. I get that it's infuriating that they're not mentioning it but in general we wouldn't want it anyway!

Twitter's decentralization play

@iMartyn @cblgh But think of the other direction: people who aren't on fedi BECAUSE we aren't connected to Twitter. Many of them would move to a fedi instance in a heartbeat if it could promise real twitter interop

Twitter's decentralization play

@darius @cblgh sort of, but what instance would? Seriously, because of the lack of acceptable moderation of Twitter, that mostly would make the timeline basically unmoderated, so I don't see any instance doing it. Having made the jump and started from scratch, I actually appreciate the divide.

Twitter's decentralization play

@iMartyn @cblgh I'm talking brand new instances.

Twitter's decentralization play

@darius I think they are worried about sudden rise in Mastodon's popularity.
