This Trump speech is I think his most authoritarian to date and that is saying something. It's terrifying. He just promised to deploy the US military to any city whose government does not deploy "overwhelming force" against their own citizens. Even as an empty threat it's terrifying

@darius also the "professional anarchists" line

@amsomniac @darius somebody PLEASE pay me to hate the government. Im over here doing this shit for free

uspol - - - - -

@darius Oh fuck, yes. Even if it's culture-war bluster --- and with Barr lurking in the wings, who knows what "law enforcement" has already been bent to --- exactly who in the bowels of Christ is he appealing to?

@darius Tear-gassing a peaceful protest in Lafayette Park just before declaring "I am your president of law and order" is some Immortan Joe shit.

@darius why not just stop looting stores? is that really that hard that the military needs to be deployed? come on people everyone's better than that right?

uspol - - - - -

@darius He’ll do his best to deploy the troops and occupy a given city. If he manages to pull that shit off, someone will be killed by the troops. I can’t even imagine what would happen after that.

@darius I just watched this after you mentioned it and I'm not really sure what to do. it's terrifying and immobilizing. "overwhelming force," "domestic terrorism". feels like a justification of force and also of mobilizing the surveillance state. yesterday at the protests here I already saw more law enforcement in one place than I've maybe ever seen in my life combined.

@darius I will say this: Yes, it's terrifying, but only for white people. This has already been the case for PoC since the founding of the country.

It's important context, since if we're ever gonna combat these fascists properly, we're gonna need to listen to the PoC that grew up under what white people are only now beginning to see. We need their experience if we're to fight back properly.

@KitsuneAlicia I'm a person of color and I find it more terrifying than usual. Maybe it's because I'm not Black.

uspol - - - - -

@darius Ah, you're right. We conflated PoC with Black. We apologize for the confusion.

And our apologies if anything came off as crass or anything, as well. Looking back at what we said, it's definitely terrifying to see Trump do this, and we didn't mean to discount that as much as we did there.

@KitsuneAlicia @darius Yeah. He's has been specifically menacing black folks for a while. A few months ago he tried to schedule a "surge" of militarized police activity into black communities, but the cops weren't coordinated enough or were already terrorizing people as much as they could get away with.

He has had speeches where he specifically positions cops that have lynched black people right behind him in places of honor. The cops have been building new 'urban warfare' facilities with scale models of Chicago and Arizona homes to menace black and brown folks. It's been like this for a while, just not for everyone.

@darius you can see where he goes off script and starts rambling semi-coherently and it's as telling as everything else.

i think what i find most frightening about this is how much i can sense the republicans in my life nodding along.

@darius

AFAIK the miliatary hate him and is less directly permeated by white supremacists than the cops or border patrols so it may be an empty threat - but you are right that it still is terriying.
