@jplebreton Hey do you know if anyone has proposed marriage via DOOM WAD? @andy was asking and I figured you of all people would know

@darius @andy hmmm, not that i know of, or can find anything about on or / the idgames archives, though deeper digging could be fine there. i feel like if it had happened within the community it would have passed into legend. i'll keep digging because it's possible there's a proposal in some mostly-forgotten map from 1995.

@jplebreton @darius @andy wait, you know what that means? there's still a chance, you could be the first, and become a legend

@jplebreton @darius Oh wow. This is more exploration than my idle thought/bad googling really warranted, but thank you for looking!

It seems tricky because this is also the exact type of map that somebody would be likely not to ever post online since it was really only intended for one person.

@jplebreton @darius @andy Especially in the US, marriage proposals have a public/performance dimension that goes way beyond "intended for one person", see all the filmed proposals in public places, sports arenas, parks, restaurants, etc...

So I wouldn't be surprised it would be posted online in that context.

@andy @darius Yep, if someone did it but never released it publicly it's probably lost to the ages.
The easiest and most common way I can think to do such a proposal would be to write on the ground with sector geo.
I've already written code that can scan through all 45,000+ maps in the idgames archive, so theoretically you could do a sort of OCR search for stuff people have written...

@andy @darius what qualifies as "lettering" in Doom sector geo is so open-ended as to seem nearly impossible as an OCR problem, though, ranging from single linedef line drawings to block letters to giant intricate structures in the shapes of letters. I would not have the first clue as to how to approach it.

@jplebreton @andy re: the legend thing, in other modding communities if this happens at all publicly it does rapidly become famous and is pretty well-documented online! though I guess that could be survivorship bias, of course no one remembers forgotten events...
