I've seen a few people complain that the black hole picture is a waste, that humanity has our environment or povery or whatever else as a far far more immediate pressing matter than to take a photo that is 'an orange smear'.

The issue at hand here isn't science funding, the issue at hand is the total structure of industrial capitalism. If you cut astronomy funding to 0, how much do you think of that would go towards social projects? How much would go towards sustainable degrowth? How much would go towards ANYTHING that goes against tje ideological principles of neoliberal capitalism.

On the contrary, there are people who find a deep romantic wonder and an inherent artistic value in things like this. People finding wonder in the world, being humbled by the nature and otherness of it is a beautiful way to look at the world. Don't light your torches at astronomy, capitalism is your issue

“the YouTube algorithm”

It’s just so weird to see a criticism of YouTube’s algorithm and of the toxicity of the platform that doesn’t AT ANY POINT just say “capitalism is bad and YouTube is a company and we can’t trust them to ever do the right thing.”

i've been working on this tabletop worldbuilding game for a long time, and now its out~~

the ground itself is a one-session collaborative storytelling game about places over time, and the echoes we leave in the physical memory of space

you can get the pdf on https://everestpipkin.itch.io/the-ground-itself

big news: DBAA is taking over the lease on a fully-legal, fully-legit bar! we're gonna have a real-ass permanent home! we're running a kickstarter to help get cover costs--please consider pitching in! kickstarter.com/projects/markk

Today is my birthday! As I do every year, I’m asking folks to donate to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center to celebrate. I’m turning 38 so $38 (or any other amount) would be wonderful! classy.org/give/161753/#!/dona

If I'm typing a bunch of unix command line stuff trying to figure out the right solution, and I eventually DO figure out the solution, one thing I do when possible is re-run the command with a comment like

$ doing-the-thing.sh # This is the one that actually works

So when I inevitably search my shell command history later, I have nice little notes

the NYer profile of the publishing grifter (Dan Mallory) upset me the same way the Fyre fest docs did. Media/art/publishing institutions hand opportunities to people like that. Gatekeepers have been trained to eat up that kind of toxic charisma, while actual talent — modestly packaged — has very little chance of going anywhere.

I'm reminded by keynote speaker Leslie Chan: share your contracts, share your salary or hourly pay rate. If illegal to share contracts (NDA), do it clandestinely. (My suggestion not his.) Compare/contrast. You'll be shocked who gets paid 2x for doing the same work, especially where gender/race is concerned.

I shared this doc of every salary I ever earned a few years ago. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d

And yes: I have been paid literally too much money for several jobs
