Tech fascists

A big mistake in tech coverage over the past decade has been depicting its figures as dorks, bureaucrats, buffoons —everything but dangerous, powerful, and fully enabling fascism if not totally fascist themselves. I get the sense that media like the HBO show Silicon Valley (which already was a mess) is going to look apologetic in retrospect. The media depiction of Zuckerberg has changed, thankfully, but not quickly enough.

@jomc I've been watching AMC's Halt and Catch Fire recently and while it doesn't address technofascism per se, it is definitely unflinching in its depiction of techies as deeply fucking flawed people

Tech fascists

@callie I love that show.

Tech fascists

@jomc it's incredible and also it does an amazing job of illuminating parts of myself I sometimes try not to think about

@callie I was really impressed that the writers were able to depict different roles — hardware, software, product manager etc for an audience that probably wasn’t familiar with the differences. And then build conflict from there.

Tech fascists

@jomc yeah, I feel like I've learned a lot about the tech business just by watching it (I honestly think I did not know how an IPO worked before they showed one go down)
